I love this advice from my friend Heather J. She mentioned this the other night and my goodness, it made a long day of travel so much better!
Heather J's advice:
Before a trip, go to the dollar store and just buy $10 worth of toys and stuff. Pull it out while traveling. Kids get excited for new toys. If they get damaged or lost, doesn't matter--it's from the dollar store. Throw them out if you want.
So I did this (not at the dollar store as I didn't think that far ahead, but still VERY cheap toys. My little guy was excited to have something new and it was so inexpensive I didn't panic about the items on the plane as we were leaving--if we had them, great. If not--no big deal.

I have also done this before. Before I left the U.S. I went to a Marshall's/Ross Dress for Less and bought a bunch of stuff.
