Organic or not?

This is a question that we, as moms, often ask ourselves when it comes to produce. On the one hand, does it even matter? On the other--we want the best for our children, so of course it matters. I have often stood at the organic section and compared prices to the regular produce and wondered whether there is a difference or not. During the spring and summer we receive a food box from a GTA farm which is great--but at this time of year--how to decide?

I hope that this list will help you make the decision as to whether to pay the extra $$ or not.

Here are the recommendations (only for fruits and veggies--meat and dairy are not on the list) from the Environmental Working Group (U.S.A).

The Clean 15:

These are the conventional produce with the lowest amts of pesticide residue

onions
avocados
corn
pineapple
mango
asparagus
sweet peas
kiwifruits
cabbages
eggplants
papayas
watermelons
broccoli
tomatoes
sweet potatoes

The Dirty Dozen
12 fruits and veggies with the most pesticide residue--worth seeking out the organics

peaches
apples
bell peppers
celery
nectarines
strawberries
cherries
kale
lettuce
imported grapes
carrots
pears

I look forward to hearing your thoughts about the organic debate.

  1. I try to get as much organic stuff as possible for my daughter. I try not to comparison shop too much with the regular produce 'cause the price would bother me.

My husband and I are enjoying the organic food too. Lately, we've been having some organic salmon from a fish monger near us and it is soooo good! I don't know if its 'cause it IS organic or 'cause we KNOW it is organic. Either way, our daughter still likes to put lots of this expensive fish on the floor. Maybe we should allow for the 10 second rule for adults consumption.

I've also heard that you should try to choose organic dairy products when possible. Fat soluble pesticides I guess.

Anyways - I'm going to continue buying organic for our family - and local as much as possible too. It must be better for the planet, and therefore better for my little one.

  2. I agree that with meat and dairy you can taste the difference.
We will have to do some more research to find great places to buy organic goodness!
