FRIDAY FAVES: BEST SLEEP BOOK/SLEEP ADVICE

I have never had a good sleeper. On today's Friday Fave tell me the best sleep advice you have ever received and/or a good sleep book so that Moms out there can have all the help they need right here!

Best advice for me?

My doc told me to turn off the baby monitor... that helped.

  1. All I can say is Ferberize. Sorry, I know it's not what a lot of moms like to hear.

  2. Best advice I was given is to teach your baby how to self-soothe early and then they will not be dependent on you to fall asleep. We did this at about 8-10 weeks and have never looked back!

We also have found that white noise has worked for our daughter right from the beginning. If you buy a white noise machine that is portable then your child can consistently hear the same sound wherever she/he sleeps.

  3. White noise machine is great. We have one that we bring with us on trips--seems to help a lot. It's a cute machine too as it is a stuffed toy lamb. So it's great.

  4. i totally agree with teaching baby to self-soothe early, as well as white noise machines. we still use white noise with my 2 year old, and now with our newborn- especially makes nap time less stressful for mom because you don't have to worry as much about keeping older kids quiet when baby is sleeping.

also- the advice of no longer than 1-2 hours of wakefulness for newborns helped me tonnes- keeps baby well-rested and gets sleeping patterns started off on the right foot!

  5. I don't know if I just got lucky but when my baby was 8 weeks old, I decided that I had had enough of spending up to 3 hours every evening trying to get him to go to sleep. I let him cry it out while standing beside his crib and laying a hand on his back. I guess I could say I used a combo of The Baby Whisperer technique and what worked for baby and me. It took about 3-4 nights and has since been a great little sleeper. When he turned about 15 months old, he went through a phase not wanting to go to bed and would howl when I put him in. I then turned to Jo Frost's (SuperNanny)advice and would stay in the room with my back to him and slowly inch my way out the door. The first night was the longest but it took about 5 nights and he was back to normal. The older he gets, the easier it gets. He is always very happy to go to bed and never fusses.
Oh, and I believe that routine is also key! He thrives on it but it's also not the end of the world if he falls alseep in the car before his bath either, he'll usually still get through the night ok.
