Back To Work Strategy #9: Dinner Out

I had a rough day at work today. It was long and had some pretty crazy challenges. I got in the car to pick up my little one from daycare and the traffic was terrible. I was so frustrated and was stressed to the max. By the time I got to him we were both hungry and tired and as we were driving home I veered into a restaurant parking lot and the next thing I knew--I had decided that today I wasn't going to worry about dinner. Both my little guy and I needed a break.

We went to a family friendly restaurant but it's a place that has decent food for adults too and he and I had a nice little date. I asked about daycare and he looked around at the restaurant and even drank milk from a glass (made from glass). We both felt pretty special and had a great time. He kept looking over at me with a big smile on his face because he knew that this was different. It was also special because it was just he and I (my husband was busy) and it was something we did just the two of us which is so rare since I went back to work.

Got him back into the car and rush hour was over so we both had a pleasant (and much shorter) drive home. We did our bedtime routine and snuggled.

I justified my little impromptu date night because I was so tired and I had a hard day. Then I realized that I shouldn't have to justify these things. It was nice to go out! I believe that every so often it's worth it to go out for a dinner and it's a pretty cool new experience for your baby or a great adventure for your toddler/preschooler. You don't have to make a habit out of it but it's nice to have someone else do the cooking and you can just focus on your child. Creating these moments gets us a little out of routine and that in itself is special.

  1. Just picturing the two of you on your "date" makes me smile. What a nice night for the two of you!
