Book Review--Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child
This book review was sent to me by new mom Jenny. I too have read this book as have my friends Jill, Steph and mom-friend Jen. My mom-friend Jen said to me a while go that she takes a little bit from each sleep book she reads.
Thanks for the Review Jenny!
Book title: Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child
Author: Marc Weissbluth, M.D
Maybe it`s the fatigue but I had to re-read many parts of this book--a lot of it seemed very complicated to me. All the science behind sleep and I was just like `TELL ME HOW TO GET ABBIE TO SLEEP!`. However, once I got past all the science, it made sense to me. I suspended my disbelief about putting my baby to bed earlier to make her sleep longer and I tried out Weissbluth`s method. AND IT WORKED.
I like the ACTION PLAN FOR EXHAUSTED PARENTS at the end of each chapter and appreciated some of the charts and it appears that his methods actually work.
The problems with this book are that it took me awhile to figure out how to implement what he is explaining in his book. It is not step-by-step and there are some confusing things where he says to feed your baby if they wake at night and appear hungry but then other parts where you are supposed to ignore them.
Overall, this book taught me about sleep. Once I learned about sleep I was able to start a program based on what he says.
But things would have been a heck of a lot easier if someone would have given me a step-by-step guide on what to do with a non-sleeping baby and how to actually teach them to sleep through the night. Not too much to ask right?? I am happy however to report that my baby is sleeping pretty well now and I have many pages highlighted from this book to thank for my success.

Great review Jenny. I have a lot of similar feelings about this book. I found it explained sleep for babies really well. I have not had an easy go with my baby and sleep--only once he was over 8 months did I get my first full night of sleep. But apparently, according to Weissbluth that is not abnormal.
ReplyDeleteThe Sleep Easy Solution by Waldburger and Spivack is a more `step by step guide`.
not an easy or overly fun read, for sure- but he knows his stuff and in my experience his advice works. i definitely recommend this book!
